Weaving Melee DPS this Patch 6.2

So there's a hot debate that keeps popping up on LFG and in Gladdy Chat and I figured we'd get some more input from the forums and other servers:

Is weaving worth it this patch?

Some are arguing that with the new PVE damage modifier that it only effects skills and not base damage so therefore it's not worth weaving.

Others are also saying (Myself included) that weaving seems difficult to do this patch, the damage doesn't seem to register in your combat log until the auto attack animation is almost all the way through making cutting the animation by hitting a skill seem almost pointless.

Personally I havn't found an equal DW set to match a PA to compare the damage without a scewed results.

Physical Attack (6.0 stat) and PvE Attack (6.0 stat) does affect auto attack damage.

You need a high grade weapon (high weapon attack) and decent attack speed in order to be able to weave effectively. If not, just spam attack skills.

Test character

  • Level 80 Chanter
  • Physical Attack 11,683
  • PvE Attack 1,165
  • Weapon damage: 327-476 (Ultimate Zenith Staff with Lakrum PvP undercombine)

Test target:

  • Level 1 Cygnea Training Dummy

Damage result:

  • Auto attack: 9285-13516 (not including extra damage from double/triple strikes)
  • Mountain Crash (2031 base): 56250
  • Booming Strike (413 base): 11438

Note:

  • Staff weapon mastery gives +25% Weapon Attack at max level
  • Chanter has base power of 110, which results in +10% Weapon Attack

  • 3 weeks later...

Physical attack and pve attack do actually scale your auto attack damage.  In fact they scale the damage in the same exact way that they scale skills.  you have to think of weapon damage weaving as an extra skill.  because it is calculated damage wise the same way a skill is calculated where your tool tip damage for the auto attack skill is your weapon damage displayed in your stat sheet on your profile.  every 1000 physical attack over the enemy's defense is 100% increase to the tooltip's damage.

"You need a high grade weapon (high weapon attack) and decent attack speed in order to be able to weave effectively. If not, just spam attack skills."

I do however agree with that statment as well as the formulas.  just not the broad statment of physical attack and pve not scaling it's damage.  If you were implying it doesn't scale the tooltip damage displayed in your stat sheet that would be correct.

Gladiators have 115 power and Polearm mastery gives +15% weapon attack, which is like having +300 physical attack when auto attacking.

Polearms are 4 strikes so each auto attacks have random damage multiplier of 1.0x, 1.1x, 1.2x, 1.3x (equal chance each), which is 1.15x on average.

The downside is that weapon attack on the best weapons are still lower than the base damage of most Gladiator skills. (that is not the number you see on the tooltip, which is 15% higher than actual value for gladiators and templars)

Off topic here but important: Is it crucial to have a pvp+pvp combine for pvp? Or is a pvp+pve combine not much worse? Also, how crucial is it to have a combined weapon at all?

Combination adds 10% of its base weapon attack to your top weapon, which will boost your auto attack damage only. The undercombine's added bonus stats and manastone slots apply fully.

From what I remember, for PvE-PvE or PvP-PvP combines, only the highest Pve Attack or PvP Attack applies. For PvE-PvP or PvP-PvE combines both will apply.

Good info. Thank you.
