I was there, during the golden age of Aion.

During beta testing there were many great battles, flocks of players from both sides invading enemy starter territory. I was there when the first battles in the Abyss were taking place. The names of those I fought with and against have gone from memory. Many hours were spent in Dredgion. The world and music still stay with me and take me back to almost 10 years ago, I cannot believe it's been 10 years.

Jeje's legion had several names over the years. He passed his legion on and no longer plays, though his characters remain in that legion and have sat untouched for years.

I started playing in '09. Yeah. I remember it all. The music in Sanctum still makes me smile.

This is for those of you who still remember..

The beginning was oh so bitter sweet. So many great battles and at the same time oh so many frustrating failed attempts at leveling due to level 40 +10 abyss gear laden uber elmo sins and the like. Still my favorite personal aion moment had nothing to do with conflict at all, and yet, it turned into my most lasting memory of this game.

I recall being on my Templar "patrolling" Morheims Patamor Ridge Path road leading down through Kellans Cabin and the spring habitat into the desert, (on one of my usual looking for random Elmo runs), when I spotted two of them out in the distance. I immediately prepped for battle and charged straight towards them. Much to my amazement, despite obviously spotting my lumbering mass of a templar, (maxed size at all) they didn't move, didn't even flinch.

I caught up to them, stopped about 10m in front of them and \waved, they waved back. I immediately sheathed my sword and got in closer, still wary of them. Through "shop stand talk" one of them asked me for directions to a certain location, apparently they were looking for Deltras Execution Grounds in order to complete a quest. I told them sure I knew and to follow and so they did. To me this was amazing. Here we were, an asmo templar escorting two elyos, (I forget what classes they were), down the sprigg path, through the desert, an up to the deltas grounds.

Along the way, we ran into an asmo sin whom wasted no time in attacking the female pigeon. I immediately yelled for him to stop, claiming they were personal friends and that I was helping them complete a quest, (lying of course.) To my amazement he bought it,  broke engagement, backed up and proceeded to walk away.

So we finally reached our destination, I stood watch as they both completed their quests. Once they did they returned over to me, and expressed their thanks for my help and proceeded to bow, I in turn replied that it was no problem and bowed in turn. They then activated their call home spells and wisked away into the aether.

I remember feeling so satisfied about that event, (and just a slight bit like a traitor.) It was, almost moving. Make no mistake, the road to leveling my Templar through 1.5 - 2.0 was taxing, arduous and tedious. I had no love for elmo and actively sought out their "blood". But for that one moment, I felt compelled to act not with violence, but kindness. And you know what, I'm glad I did.

(Sorry for the short story lol. Still vividly recall that event to this day.)

Man, I remember back in 2009 when Aion launched it was a pretty big deal. I always found it weird it had such a close resemblance to Shaiya at that time, with lore, race vs race, 1 god split in two, it made me really want to play it. I knew my laptop at that time would never be able to run it smoothly and I couldn't afford to buy the game and pay the sub, but of course there were private servers. That was the only time and my chance to try the game out until I promised myself to play it again someday. Had to wait 6 years for that.

Apparently my first Elyos toon was an Assassin, then I went to try out Asmodians and it was a Spiritmaster.

Aion when:

  • There was massive western player hype that led to us doing the marketing for NC
  • The factual reality that it was a zombie grind Korean game was ignored
  • When western players were distracted by the pretty graphics over WOW's cartoon like graphics

Once that initial "wow!" moment passed, the merges happened and the game hemorrhaged players.

I'm actually surprised western players still care in the least for Korean MMOs as the model is the same, a zombie grind and "milk the players dry" cash shop micro-transactions system.

But hey, the graphics. Yeah, I fell for this one too, the graphics were indeed nice compared to what was available at the time. They still aren't bad but the furry fetish is doing a great job at removing the only appealing aspect of this game.
